I’m so excited about this post because I would’ve killed for this type of content when I was launching my blog 2 years ago.
Today I will be going DEEP into the mistakes you DO NOT want to make when you’re setting up and launching your blog. These mistakes could set you back a few steps down the line, so it is best to get everything in line now. Did I make some of these mistakes? Absolutely, and there is no reason for you to make the same mistake too; that’s what I’m here for.
1. not having legal pages.
A blog is a business, and like any business, big or small you need to make sure that everything aligns with the law. At the beginning of your blogging journey, you need a few legal pages in order to apply to affiliate programmes, Google Analytics and any collaborations in the future. The #1 reason I purchased legal documents for my blog is that I didn’t want to get in trouble with the authorities and be sued for money I did not have!
The 3 necessary legal pages that every blog needs are Terms and Conditions, Disclaimer and Privacy and Policies. Initially, I wanted to be stingy and find a free legal template online but after reading through them, there were a lot of gaps and very vague sections.
After reading dozens of blog posts I came across Amira, a lawyer and business owner. She has a bunch of legal templates for bloggers, virtual assistances and other freelancers. I purchased a bundle which included all 3 necessary pages I needed. Each template is perfect for anyone around the world and is so easy to customise. Amira makes it so easy.
This is the legal bundle I got…
2. prioritising everything but pinterest.
Don’t take Pinterest for granted, especially when you are starting off. Pinterest is the perfect way to market your site because it is constantly driving new people to your site every day (if done correctly). If you need a little help with Pinterest I wrote a post last year, giving you a step-by-step guide. Click here.
3. not learning about seo.
When I first started my blog 2 years ago, I had ZERO ideas about what “SEO” was. To be honest, there are days when I am still perplexed about it. As a beginner, the best way to start to understand how to use SEO to your advantage would be to download a plugin that will let give you tips to improve your overall SEO score. I use “Yoast SEO”, and I still love it, 2 years later.
So, Yoast SEO will give you an analysis as you start to write each blog post on WordPress which is made up of green light (good), amber (needs improvement) and red (problems). This guideline has helped me create content that reaches Google’s page 1!
4. replicating content from larger blogs.
At the beginning of my blogging journey, I knew exactly what I wanted to write about but I had no idea where to start, or what content people actually wanted to see and interact with. If you are thinking like this, stop. At the end of the day, this blog is your creative outlet. Instead of focusing on the consumer, focus on creating content you love; because at the end of the day, you are more likely to stick with it.
Yes, you can look at your competitors and/or people you look up to in the “blogging world” for inspiration, but leave it at that. Replicating content will only get you so far.
5. apply to every affiliate programme.
This is one of the biggest mistakes I made.
In the beginning, it is difficult to generate any income from affiliate programmes straight away because you need to build trust with your community first.
Before applying to any affiliate programme make sure to read the terms and conditions because different programmes have rules on how many sales you have to make in a specific time frame. Unfortunately, I did not read through the rules properly, so I ended up getting kicked out of the programme due to not meeting the requirements. Don’t get me wrong, I’m not saying to not apply to any affiliate programme programmes, just be careful and don’t rush into it.
