SETTING BOUNDARIES | HOW TO CREATE HEALTHY BOUNDARIES WITH YOURSELF AND OTHERS

I briefly go a little into setting boundaries in my 25 days of self-care post ,but today we will be going into a lot more detail.

Setting personal boundaries helps you set an outline helping others understand your likes and dislikes.

Not only will I be getting into how you can set boundaries with other people ,but also with yourself because that is equally as important. Setting boundaries is a skill. So let’s start, it’s time to set some boundaries!

SETTING BOUNDARIES:

1. ASSIGN TIME FOR YOURSELF EVERDAY

Whether you are a fellow introvert like myself ,or an extrovert, feeling comfortable in your own company is such an important life skill that everyone should practice. Assigning some time for yourself allows you to stay grounded and helps you regulate your emotions. Once you set time for yourself daily ,you will start to understand what is important to you.

Activities you can do when you are alone:

  • Journal
  • Read
  • Something creative
  • Pamper yourself

If you struggle to prioritise “me-time”, time block or add this time to your calendar to help keep you accountable.

2. LIMIT TIME YOU SPEND ON SOCIAL MEDIA DAILY

It’s no secret that social media is not the best for our mental health. Spending too much time watching other people’s highlight reels can cause you to compare your life with others, aswell as procrastinate.

So, in order to prevent this, it is important to assign a time limit whenever you are on social media.

QUICK WAYS TO REGULATE THE TIME YOU ARE ON SOCIALS:

3. SET “OFF SCREEN” TIME

As well as regulating the time you spend on social media, setting a time where you are completely off your screen is equally as important. Not only is it beneficial to your eyes, spending some time off all of your screens (laptop included!) will increase your focus.

At times when I am craving some screen time when I should be having some downtime, I like to put on a podcast, so I am able to consume some content without physically being in front of a screen.

4. REMOVE “DRAINING” APPS FROM YOUR HOME SCREEN

Another boundary you can set for yourself is removing anything that drains you, one being apps. iOS came out with a new update last year ,where you are able to remove apps from your home screen without completely deleting them. So, you can now declutter your home screen very easily.

All you need to do is press and hold the app you wish to remove from your home screen and the menu shown below will appear. Click “remove app” and you will see an option to “remove from your home screen”. That’s it. So simple.

After you have removed all of the apps from your home screen, you can organise your phone to your preference.

Another way that you can set a boundary is by moving all of your social media or apps which you spend a little too much time on ,to the last page in your phone. This way, it is not the first thing that you see when you open up your phone, therefore, decreasing the screen time for said apps.

5. SAY NO WITHOUT GUILT

Knowing when to say “NO” is an important healthy boundary that everyone should practise because it helps others gain clarity on what they should expect from you. Saying “no” isn’t selfish, it is helpful- not just for yourself but to others. Just saying “no” doesn’t matter, but WHEN, WHY and HOW you say it.

We should all learn the art of saying no.

THE ART OF SAYING NO:

6. SEPARATE WORK AND PERSONAL LIFE

Creating a work-life boundary can be extremely difficult especially as an entrepreneur or even if you work from home.

A tip that I implemented into my routine was creating a schedule that showed me exactly how much time I was spending working and socialising using my Google Calendar. By creating separate calendars which were colour coded, you will be able to see exactly how much “balance” you have. Yes, balance is not always possible, there will be times where work is a little bit outweighed and vice versa. But it is always beneficial to be self-aware.

Making this your first step to creating a boundary with yourself, will help you make the transformation to creating a work and personal life separation.

          3. SET “OFF SCREEN” TIME

          As well as regulating the time you spend on social media, setting a time where you are completely off your screen is equally as important. Not only is it beneficial to your eyes, spending some time off all of your screens (laptop included!) will increase your focus.

          At times when I am craving some screen time when I should be having some downtime, I like to put on a podcast, so I am able to consume some content without physically being in front of a screen.

          4. REMOVE “DRAINING” APPS FROM YOUR HOME SCREEN

          Another boundary you can set for yourself is removing anything that drains you, one being apps. iOS came out with a new update last year ,where you are able to remove apps from your home screen without completely deleting them. So, you can now declutter your home screen very easily.

          All you need to do is press and hold the app you wish to remove from your home screen and the menu shown below will appear. Click “remove app” and you will see an option to “remove from your home screen”. That’s it. So simple.

          After you have removed all of the apps from your home screen, you can organise your phone to your preference.

          Another way that you can set a boundary is by moving all of your social media or apps which you spend a little too much time on ,to the last page in your phone. This way, it is not the first thing that you see when you open up your phone, therefore, decreasing the screen time for said apps.

          5. SAY NO WITHOUT GUILT

          Knowing when to say “NO” is an important healthy boundary that everyone should practise because it helps others gain clarity on what they should expect from you. Saying “no” isn’t selfish, it is helpful- not just for yourself but to others. Just saying “no” doesn’t matter, but WHEN, WHY and HOW you say it.

          We should all learn the art of saying no.

          6. SEPARATE WORK AND PERSONAL LIFE

          Creating a work-life boundary can be extremely difficult especially as an entrepreneur or even if you work from home.

          A tip that I implemented into my routine was creating a schedule that showed me exactly how much time I was spending working and socialising using my Google Calendar. By creating separate calendars which were colour coded, you will be able to see exactly how much “balance” you have. Yes, balance is not always possible, there will be times where work is a little bit outweighed and vice versa. But it is always beneficial to be self-aware.

          Making this your first step to creating a boundary with yourself, will help you make the transformation to creating a work and personal life separation.
