I’m back with another post, all about self-care! The term “self-care” has been floating around social media a lot recently and I think it’s safe to say that the word “self-care” has many facades. Personally, I believe self-care is what you make it. Some days the best thing you can do for yourself is lie down and binge a show and on the other hand, it is to complete your to-do list.

I’m currently reading Grace Beverley’s book, “Working Hard, Hardly working”, where she goes all into “hustle porn”. In the first chapter and she said something that really hit the nail on the head regarding self-care, saying “that self-care is more often finally doing things you’ve been putting off, like laundry or replying to that old school friend, rather than sitting back with a face mask”. I see where Grace is going with this point, and I will go much deeper in the monthly overview at the end of the month!

Making self-care an apparent part of your routine is crucial, so, I’ve made a list of 25 self-care tasks as a starting point to give you some ideas of tasks you can do. However, don’t stop there, this list is just a guide to get you started. For the next 25 days, try and practice one self-care task a day. I’m sure you will start to feel a shift in your mental health!

25 DAYS OF SELF CARE:

1. SET BOUNDARIES

Setting boundaries is ESSENTIAL and it comes in so many forms! Boundaries can be applied to, your partner, friends, family, work and more importantly, yourself. They are so important because they let people know exactly where they stand and what you will tolerate, essentially acting as an outline.

In the past year, I made a conscious effort to apply boundaries to every aspect of my life because I felt I was putting others before myself, in situations where I shouldn’t. Once I started setting and applying boundaries, I noticed that I felt so much happier within myself.

It takes a little getting used to and initially you may feel a little uncomfortable, but you will get used to it, trust me.

WHERE TO START:

  • Put your phone on do not disturb
  • Set “me time” where you don’t answer to anyone
  • Turn your phone notifications off
  • Do what YOU want to do

2. TAKE A WALK IN NATURE

Getting outside does wonders for your mental health, moving your body and getting fresh air will help to reset your mind. Add to the experience by listening to music or a podcast, here are some podcast episodes I recommend.

EAM’S PODCAST RECS:

3. GET DRESSED UP

It’s crazy how getting dressed up every morning can make you feel so much better about yourself. Yes, it may seem like a lot of effort, but you will instantly feel and look so much better. If you want to be comfy throughout the workday, tracksuits are my go-to but if I want to feel like a bad b, I will chuck on baggy jeans and a crop top. If you’re feeling extra, take out your self-timer and take some pics (this got me through lockdown!).

GO TO WORK FROM HOME FIT:

4. DO SOMETHING CREATIVE

Exercising your creativity is a great way to escape mentally. Not only does it aid in stress relief, it also is a great way to express yourself.

5. DON’T TAKE ANY BS

If someone asks you to do something that you don’t want to do or you’re preoccupied, say no. Don’t feel obliged to do things you don’t want to do. This is your life, so stay in control.

6. TREAT YOURSELF

This has been one of my words for the year! Treating yourself doesn’t need to be a cash loss, set boundaries with yourself, have discipline and stay within your budget.

EXAMPLES:

  • GET A MASSAGE
  • READ A BOOK
  • GO OUT TO EAT
  • TAKE THE DAY OFF
  • HAVE A LONG BATH

7. LISTEN TO A PODCAST

Listening to a podcast is an act of escapism as well as a place where you can learn. There are hundreds of thousands for you to pick, from true crime stories to entrepreneurial tips, so you will definitely find something you will enjoy.

I collated a list of my go-to podcast’s, I’m sure you’ll all find a handful that you will love. Here are a few that I listen to every day:

8. BUY YOURSELF SOME FLOWERS

If you’re a fellow flower lover like me, the small act of buying a bunch of flowers can instantly brighten up your day. As a single gal, I make the effort to buy myself flowers every couple of months, because why not? However, if you are not the biggest fan of flowers, substitute it with something else you love but may usually not buy for yourself.

9. DO A HAIR MASK

You hair deserves some love too!

10. CLEAR OUT YOUR UNDERWEAR DRAW

It’s crazy how our underwear draw gets overlooked at times. Blast some music or a podcast and declutter your underwear draw and maybe your clothes if you’re feeling brave.

11. HAVE A PHOTOSHOOT

Nothing is more of a confidence booster than throwing on a badass fit and taking pictures of yourself on a self-timer or with a Bluetooth clicker!

12. TAKE YOURSELF OUT ON A DATE

Dress up, go to a cute cafe or restaurant, go for a long walk, you can even go shopping. Spending some “me-time” is so important to learn more about yourself. When you are out, put on your headphones if you want to escape or people watch if you want to feel a little more present!

You are the only permanent person in your life, so take time alone to get to know yourself.

13. PUT ON A FACE MASK

Showing your skin some love is another high form of self-care!

GO-TO FACE MASKS:

14. CREATE A VISION BOARD

A vision board to a great way to visualise your goals and aspirations. Having a visual representation of your dreams will keep you focused AND it is super relaxing. Map out and visualise your goals for the future. No goal is too big, if you want a black Tesla, put it on your board, if you want a 6 figure business, put it on your board!

QUICK TIP: CREATE YOUR VISION BOARD DIGITALLY SO YOU CAN MAKE IT AS YOUR PHONE AND LAPTOP WALLPAPER

15. READ

Grab a book and lose yourself between the lines.

I have 2 book reviews in each 2021 “Monthly Overview” if you’re not sure what book to read next…

16. WRITE A LETTER TO YOUR FUTURE SELF

Grab your phone or your laptop and write a letter to your future self, so you can open it in 1, 2 or even 5 years! There are so many templates on Pinterest for you to follow to help you. Go into as much detail as possible because it will make reading it back so much more eye-opening. It’s crazy to read them back and seenhow far you have come.

17. HAVE A GROUP CALL WITH YOUR FRIENDS/ FAMILY

Having a laugh with your friends is another form of therapy that will instantly lift your mood and make you feel good.

18. HAVE A SOCIAL MEDIA DETOX

It’s so important to take some time away from social media once in a while, social media is very draining and it is not real life so it is key to stay as present as possible. Sign out of your social media for a weekend and you’ll feel a shift.

19. HAVE AN EARLY NIGHT

Some may call you boring, I call it self-love. Sleep cures everything!

20. GIVE YOURSELF A MANICURE &/ OR PEDICURE

Sometimes going to the nail salon monthly can get quite expensive. So, go to your nearest drugstore and buy a new nail polish, and give yourself a little pamper day.

21. JOURNAL

Getting all of your thoughts and feelings out on paper is such an effective self-care act that you can practise every day. Personally, I find journaling is like therapy, but without the price tag.

22. HAVE A MOVIE MARATHON

Sometimes the best act of self-care is to just crash in front of the TV and binge your go-to show or movie. Grab your favourite snacks and get engrossed by your favourite show.

23. WRITE A LIST OF GRATITUDE

Writing things you are grateful for is such a quick and easy way to shift into a positive mindset because it is pushing you to think positively!

Get your hands on this digital or physical product to help you keep on track with gratitude journaling…

24. ORGANISE YOURSELF

Sometimes the best thing you can do for yourself is to just get things done.

WHERE TO START:

25. PRACTISE LOVE LANGUAGES ON YOURSELF

Love languages are not just for relationships. Why wait to get into a relationship before you start practising love languages, take the test here and start doing acts that make you feel good!

ACTS TO DO ACCORDING TO YOUR LOVE LANGUAGE:

  • GIFTS: Buy yourself something small
  • PHYSICAL TOUCH: Have a long bath and do your body care routine
  • ACTS OF SERVICE: Complete a task you have been procrastinating
  • WORDS OF AFFIRMATION: Write down what you love about yourself
  • QUALITY TIME: Take yourself out on a date

And that’s it!

I’ve given you 25 ways you can practise self-love! Put yourself first all year round! What is the first self-love act you’re starting with?

      15. READ
