MOVE IN DAY IS NEARLY UPON US!

Move-in day comes with a mix of emotions. It is exciting because it is a fresh start, but it can also be very daunting and nerve-wracking living in a new space away from your family. So, I came up with 14 tips that I wish I knew when I was a fresher. I hope it helps make your move-in day a little bit smoother.

14 TIPS FOR MOVE IN DAY:

1. PACK YOUR CLEANING SUPPLIES AND TOOLBOX CLOSEBY

When you arrive you will notice how dusty dorm rooms are! So before you move everything in, you will need to clean the room properly. Making sure that your cleaning supplies are accessible, will make move-in day go so much faster. If you are not sure what cleaning supplies you will need, download my free printable here.

Toolboxes are also important to pack closeby, depending on if you have any furniture to build. I bought a toolbox on move-in day, which was so ideal when I had to build my mini trolley. Amazon has really affordable mini tool kits!

2. START EARLY

Move-in day really does go so quickly! It is so easy to underestimate how long it takes to unpack and organise your whole room. If you think about it, it didn’t take you a day to pack all of your belongings!

Universities/ Colleges usually give you a time slot to pick up your keys. Fingers crossed you are lucky and get an early slot! The more time you have, the less stressed and overwhelmed you would be.

Also, you want to have enough time to say goodbye to your family so you can get ready for the parties!

MY EXPERIENCE: I MOVED TO ANOTHER COUNTRY, SO I HAD TO BUY EVERYTHING FOR MY DORM ROOM IN 1 DAY! IT TOOK ME 2-3 DAYS TO COMPLETELY MOVE IN AND ORGANISE.

3. PACK SNACKS & WATER

Moving is so tiring and you’ll be surprised how often you feel peckish and thirsty. Make sure you pack loads of snacks in a backpack or handbag for you and your family to enjoy during the unpacking process.

4. PACK YOUR ITEMS BY CATEGORY

You’d be surprised how many things you quickly accumulate when you are packing everything up! As a result, it is so easy to jumble random items together to make the job go quicker. I do not advice this! Packing like items together seems daunting at first but it will help save you so much time on move-in day.

5. USE STORAGE ITEMS FOR YOUR ROOM WHEN PACKING

Instead of buying heaps and heaps of cardboard boxes, you can use storage boxes you intend to use in your room to pack up your items. Genius right?! This would save so space when you are unpacking.

If you want to be extra efficient, you can organise what you plan on putting in the storage ahead of time. Then, when you arrive all you have to do it put it away!

6. TRANSPORT YOUR CLOTHES ON HANGERS

Unpacking your clothes eats up so much of your precious time on move-in day. By leaving them all on the hangers, will help you unpack your clothes in minutes!

QUICK TIP: TO PROTECT YOUR CLOTHES FROM DIRT AND DUST, PLACE THE CLOTHES IN A BLACK BAG AND PIERCE THE TOP, SO THE TOP OF THE HANGERS CAN GET THROUGH.

7. STORAGE BAGS ARE YOUR BEST FRIEND

If you’re not keen on hanging up all of your clothes, these vacuum-sealed storage bags are perfect. I love to pack my clothes in these because they haven’t got a fixed shape so you can stuff so many clothes in each bag.

The best thing about them is that they are multifunctional, you can use them to store away seasonal clothes, transport laundry and pack old blankets away.

8. LABEL ALL OF YOUR BOXES

After you have packed all of your boxes in separate categories, don’t forget to label each one with a list on what is inside. This will make the unpacking process less painful.

9. WEAR COMFORTABLE CLOTHES

Make sure to wear comfy clothes because you will be carrying so many bags and boxes! Getting sweaty is a given, so I suggest wearing trackies and a t-shirt or crop top.

10. COORDINATE WITH YOUR ROOMMATE

I can’t think of anything worse than moving in at the exact same time as your roommate! Dorm rooms are tight enough as it is. It is best to plan ahead what time you’re both going to move in, to prevent the chaos.

To save space, plan which items you are each going to buy to prevent having doubles.

11. HAVE ALL YOUR DOCUMENTS READY ON MOVE IN DAY

When you arrive, you will need documents so you can pick up your keys. Your university/ college should send you an email with everything you need!

MY EXPERIENCE: I MISREAD MY FLAT BLOCK, SO WE CARRIED ALL OF MY BOXES UP 2 FLIGHTS OF STAIRS…TO THE WRONG FLAT!

12. GET A PORTABLE TROLLEY IF YOU CAN

I wish I had one of these when I was moving in last year! This trolley would’ve been so handy to carry a couple of boxes at a time, especially if your flat is on a higher level. It is also foldable so you can store it away easily, until you need to move out.

13. BE PREPARED TO GO BACK TO THE STORE

It’s okay if you forget to buy a few things, you’re only human. When you are moving, create an ongoing list in your notes app of anything you need to pick up. You can also return anything you didn’t need in the end.

14. BUY YOUR GROCERIES AFTER

You’re going to have enough boxes to carry as it is. I suggest buying your groceries when you are picking up anything you forgot to buy. Don’t forget anything with this shopping list printable!

And that’s it!

I wish you all the best! If you follow all of my tips I’m sure you all will have a smooth move- in day…
