When I was choosing what university I wanted to go to, the accommodation was extremely important to me! If I could not see myself in the space, I was not going there. Simple. Dorm rooms are usually so: plain, empty, boring and cold. All I wanted was to transform it into a warm, pretty space that showcased my personality. I’m happy to say that I have come up with 12 innovative ways to transform your dorm into a home!
TRANSFORM YOUR DORM WITH THESE TIPS…
1. Have a colour palette
As soon as your accommodation is in place, the first thing you should be thinking about is your colour palette.
Your colour palette shouldn’t be more than 3 colours, this will allow the colours to stand out individually and not get too lost. Additionally, try to make sure that the colours compliment each other. This will make your room will look more seamless.
Below are some colour palette inspo…
2. Cover cork board with wrapping paper
On move-in day, to my horror, I was welcomed by a bright ORANGE bulletin board covered in so many black and brown stains. I was horrified! If you are anything like me, I came to university with a detailed plan of how I wanted my space to look. Orange was definitely NOT in my colour palette! On the bright side, my mum came up with a genius life hack… covering the board in wrapping paper.
Not only is it so affordable (usually £1 for a roll), they come in so many cute designs. You can pick a design that goes with your colour palette.
Places you can get wrapping paper from are:
- Amazon
- Homesense
- TK Maxx
- Ikea (cloth)
- Primark
You can honestly get it anywhere!
3. Invest in a rug
Most rooms come with hardwood floor. Although they can be practical, hardwood is not very comfy. The best investment I made in my room, was my large grey rug from Ikea.
Rugs instantly make your room feel and look so comfy and homely. I suggest placing the rug slightly under the bed so your feet are comforted when you wake up.
Depending on the size of your room, you can get more than 1. I ended getting 3 (1 large and 2 small ones).
Ikea sell a small fluffy white rug that can be draped over a chair, acting as decor.
Finally, make sure that you don’t skimp out when buying rugs! Although rugs can quite be expensive, it is best to buy quality that will last throughout your time at university.
4. Get lots of blankets
Blankets are one of the first things that I bought because I knew I was going to an extremely cold climate (Scotland is not a joke).
Not only do they keep you warm, but they are also such an easy way to spice up space or cover up ugly furniture! I used large blankets to cover up the orange lounge chair that came with the room. Blanket styling can be tricky, here are a few ways that you can style them.
The best blankets, HANDS-DOWN are from Primark and Amazon! Both being extremely soft, large and durable for the price (thank me later).
5. Don’t skimp out on your bathroom
Bathrooms are usually very plain and dull. Adding only a few things to your bathroom can really transform your space.
A few things you can to your bathroom:
- Towels
- Face towel
- Bath mat
- Shower curtain
- Bin
Sometimes you are given some on these things, however, you can store them away and use your own. If you want to!
If you want to go the extra mile, you can even match your handwash to your colour palette (you read that right). Or you can purchase a container to put your hand-wash in that matches your theme.
6. Bringing some decorations from home
Living in a new environment alone can be quite daunting. Bringing a few decorative pieces from home can really be the small difference that transforms your dorm into a home.
This can include:
- Photos
- Prints
- Pillows
- Blankets
7. Add Greenery
Adding some plants, both real or fake, will add so much life to your dorm. Having the responsibility of looking after a real plant, distracts you from homesickness that you may be suffering from.
As well as responsibility, plants are so pretty and change your interior instantly! If you are afraid that you will kill the plant, cacti or succulents are really easy to look after. They usually only need watering no more than once a week!
You can also store your plants in a cute plant pot. There are so many pretty ones on Amazon.
Shop my favourite plant pots…
8. Add a fragrance
Usually, dorms/ accommodations don’t allow candles, as they are a fire risk. On the bright side, throughout my first year, I discovered other ways I could add fragrance in my room.
9. Throw Pillows!!!
I don’t know what I did before I knew what throw pillows were. They will kick your dorm room up a notch, or two!! The best part about them is that you don’t need too many, 1-5 are perfect. By adding just a few, can really switch up your space. Not only can they be placed on your bed, but on your lounge chair, desk chair or you can create a comfy “me time” area in the corner of your room.
COMFY CORNER INSPO…
10. Keep things organised
Why am I always talking about organisation? Organisation is always going to be a part of every space whether we like it or not. If your space is not organised and/or clean, it is never going to feel like a home.
Therefore, creating organisation systems will put you at ease, so you can really start to relax.
11. Add some extra lighting
Adding a bit of ambient lighting in your space, is very calm and serene.
For instance, fairy lights are easily accessible and affordable. Unfortunately, most universities do not allow fairy lights that plug into the wall. However, there are battery-powered fairy lights available on Amazon.
As well as fairy lights, I also love LED lights!!
12. Comfortable work space
The reason we are at university in the first place is to get an education (duhh).
So a comfortable workspace is very important (preferably not in bed). Desk chairs really are crucial to your experience when working. That being said, your dorm/accommodation usually comes with a desk chair (mine was uncomfortable and orange…yuck). I made a few tweaks that made it 1000 times better.
Try adding…
- Throw
- Small fluffy rug
- Blanket
- Chair cushion
By adding these things I felt myself drawn to working at my desk more.
Take away notes…
- Don’t skimp out on your rug
- Come with a colour palette in mind
- Evenly distribute each colour evenly, to prevent your room looking messy and cluttered
- Throw pillows and blankets are your new best friend
- Bring a few things from home to feel more secure
